In accordance with the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1992 on the protection of the elderly, October 1 is celebrated annually as the International Day of the Elderly.
As a result of the special attention and care given to the elderly and their social protection by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the International Day of the Elderly has been celebrated at a high level every year in our country since 1993.
One of the main directions of the social policy implemented by President Ilham Aliyev is caring for the elderly and strengthening their social protection year by year. As a result of the relevant decrees and orders signed by the head of state, as well as implemented programs, important steps have been taken in the direction of increasing state care for the elderly.
According to the Law "On Social Services", people who have reached the age of 70 are considered elderly in our country.
In recent years, the project "Building a society for all ages: promoting the well-being of the elderly in Azerbaijan through active aging", a joint project of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population and the UN Population Fund, implemented in recent years at the initiative of the First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, is aimed at elderly people. was an important support. Different measures were implemented to help those people lead an active and healthy lifestyle according to the project.
Presently, 216 elderly people are living under state protection in the social service institution for the elderly of the Social Services Agency under the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population. In recent years, conditions have been created in this institution according to modern requirements, and an additional building with 5 floors and 170 seats has been put into use. Events, excursions to cultural centers, various recreation centers, walks, etc. are organized here for the efficient organization of leisure time of the elderly residents.
The residents of the enterprise are involved in football and gymnastics classes within the implemented projects. For 2 years now, seniors have been participating in the "Gymnastics for All" festival and winning prizes.
This year, the agency provided social-household services to 4,366 lonely and disabled people, of which 3,980 were elderly people. In recent years, daycare centers for the elderly have been established as a new direction in the social service system. Currently, 3 such day care centers are operating in Ganja, Gazakh and Khachmaz regions.
According to the "State Program for the Development of Social Services in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2023-2026", projects related to the involvement of elderly people in socially useful activities, purposeful use of their knowledge and skills, etc. are also being implemented.
