It's been 38 years since the horrifying accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.
In 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident occurred on April 26th. Since then, many people from Azerbaijan have participated in the efforts to mitigate the consequences of that dreadful disaster.
President Ilham Aliyev's special attention to vulnerable groups of society, such as individuals with disabilities, has facilitated significant steps towards strengthening social protection for those affected by the Chernobyl incidents.
People with disabilities due to reasons related to Chernobyl are classified into two groups: those with disabilities due to military service at the Chernobyl NPP (2047 individuals) and those with disabilities due to the elimination of the Chernobyl NPP accident (1824 individuals).
The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population provides housing and automobile assistance to individuals with disabilities due to military service at the Chernobyl NPP.
Additionally, individuals in this category receive monthly allowances from the President (500 manats for a disability level of 81-100%, 400 manats for 61-80%, and 330 manats for 31-60%).
Individuals with disabilities due to the elimination of the Chernobyl NPP accident receive a monthly allowance from the President (200 manats, and for those with a 1st-degree disability in the eyes, 300 manats).
Both groups of individuals with disabilities receive disability pensions, while some also receive monthly disability benefits (270 manats, 220 manats, 150 manats according to disability levels). Caregivers of all individuals with a 1st-degree disability receive the President's monthly allowance (100 manats).
It's worth noting that as a result of the reforms, the average monthly amount of pensions has more than doubled over the past 5 years, and the payments of benefits and allowances have increased fivefold.
Children of deceased or parents with disabilities of the 1st and 2nd degrees due to the Chernobyl disaster, as well as children registered in the dispensary records of participants in the elimination of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, also receive monthly social benefits.
Individuals with disabilities due to the Chernobyl NPP accident receive annual one-time benefits, as well as medical-social rehabilitation services and provisions for sanatorium-resort institutions.
