The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, taking place in Baku this month, will feature a series of events organized in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Azerbaijan. These events will include in-depth discussions on a range of topics such as human development, green jobs, decent work for all, and social protection. Representatives from various countries and international organizations will participate in these discussions.
The high-level meeting on "Investing in Human Development for a Climate-Resilient Future" to be held on November 18 will facilitate the exchange of best practices in investing in human development for a climate-resilient future and mobilize commitments for those investments.
The event will bring together ministers and senior officials from various countries, UN agencies, and other international organizations to examine the impact of transitioning to a climate-resilient economy on the labour market. In addition, the event will address ways to enhance the resilience of human capital to climate change through better social protection and improved skills, and the value of creating synergies among education, health, employment, and skills development to strengthen human development.
Productive employment and decent work for all, social support mechanisms, and mobilizing efforts to increase investments in human development for a climate-resilient future will remain priority topics.
The high-level roundtable on “Green Jobs and Skills”, scheduled for the same day, will focus on upskilling the workforce for green jobs and employment, and creating access to green jobs for vulnerable population groups, with collaboration and increased investments in these areas being key discussion points.
Another event entitled “Safeguarding Human Development: Mobilizing Climate Finance for Social Protection” will focus on how climate finance can support vulnerable groups and discuss the role of social protection in this context.
A cross-regional South-South Policy Dialogue “From vision to Practice for a Just Transition for All” is scheduled to take place on 20-21 November 2024. The event will address topics such as strengthening climate plans to promote green jobs, sustainable enterprises, and circular economy approaches amid climate change and just transition, as well as sharing knowledge and experience in these areas. In addition, financial mechanisms, and the application of the ILO Guidelines for a Just Transition to environmentally sustainable economy, especially in the energy sector, and other related issues will be discussed.
